Seven mothers took the stage to highlight a need to protect black Americans from gun violence and police brutality on Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention.
“You don’t stop being a mom when your child dies,” said Lucy McBath, mother of Jordan Davis. “I lived in fear my son would die like this.”
McBath, Geneva Reed-Veal, mother of Sandra Bland, and Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, spoke while the four other mothers looked on. They all said Hillary Clinton understood the anger over the deaths of their children and would help them find justice.
The “Mothers of the Movement” portion of the convention was a primetime address on a criminal justice system some minorities believe is broken and racist. These mothers spoke as part of the Black Lives Matter movement and #MothersOfTheMovement started trending on Twitter.
